Best Uses for Aluminum in Metal Fabrication

Best Uses for Aluminum in Metal Fabrication

aluminum in metal fabrication

When you think of aluminum, the first thing that likely comes to mind is the aluminum cans you save and take to bottle drop to recycle.

You might be surprised to find out that aluminum’s applications are much more far-reaching than just cans, however.  In fact, aluminum has proven one of the most often used metals in metal fabrications.  With that in mind, let’s take a closer look at what makes aluminum so popular and how you might be able to use it in your next metal fabrication undertaking.

Electrical

Because of its low density, it’s a popular choice for long-distance power lines.  Due to the fact that it’s light and more malleable than copper, aluminum can easily be woven into wire.

It’s anti-corrosive nature also allows it to stand the test of time against the elements.

On a smaller scale, aluminum has become the metal of choice for satellite dishes, fuse boxes, sound systems, and other residential appliances.

All Kinds of Consumer Goods

Aluminum is one of the most non-toxic metals around.  For that reason, it’s become increasingly popular for the packaging of food, medications, and drinks.  More specifically, aluminum doesn’t affect the taste of food, it repels moisture, and it extends shelf life compared to other packaging materials.

Aside from storage, aluminum is great for making foil, trays, cookware, refrigerators, toasters, and utensils.

The use of aluminum is electronic devices has also taken hold.  Devices like smartphones, laptops, and televisions all benefit from aluminum’s lightweight, durability, and sleek look.

Because it’s such a great conductor of heat, aluminum helps prevent electronic devices from overheating.

Transportation

As strange as it might seem, aluminum has had a presence in all modes of transportation for a long time.  Once again, the metal’s durability and lightweight help trains increase fuel efficiency and reduce carbon emissions.

Aluminum also plays a significant role in the aviation industry.  Compared to other metals, it’s extremely durable and lightweight.  These properties make it the metal of choice for airplane parts and instruments.

NASA also utilizes aluminum in its spacecraft for the same purposes.

In the automobile industry, car manufacturers are increasingly turning to aluminum in the construction of car and truck frames.  Again, lighter weight increases fuel efficiency and helps meet emission standards.

Construction

Aluminum is gaining significant traction in the construction industry as well.  Buildings made of aluminum require very little if any maintenance because the metal is so resistant to corrosion.

The properties of aluminum also make it a great choice for homes and buildings because they allow the metal to be thermally efficient.  During the cold winter months, aluminum keeps indoor spaces warm.  Conversely, it keeps the same spaces cool during warmer times of the year.

Today, you’ll most commonly find aluminum used in the construction of high-rise buildings and bridges.  It’s lightweight and malleability makes it easier and faster to work with than other metals which in turn, saves substantial labor and material costs.

Final Thoughts

There’s no shortage of metals to choose from when it comes to fabrication of any kind.  While steel certainly has its place, aluminum is becoming ever more popular.
