MIG vs TIG Welding

MIG vs TIG Welding

May 2, 2022 5:04 pm

Welding is a technique used for joining metal parts through heat and pressure. The metal fabrication process forms a durable joint between the two metals. In addition to melting the base metal, a filler material is often added to the joint for strength and stability. Two of the most common welding processes are MIG and TIG welding. Continue reading to learn the different between MIG vs TIG welding.

Comparing MIG vs TIG Welding

To first understand metal inert gas (MIG) welding and tungsten inert gas (TIG) welding, you need a general overview of arc welding. The arc welding process is when an electric arc is used to create heat to melt and join metals. An electric arc from an AC or DC power supply creates an intense heat of around 6500°F which melts the metal at the join between two work pieces. A protective shielding is used to minimize the metal with the air when it is heated to high temperatures in the arc. There are many types of arc welding processes. Among them are MIG welding and TIG welding.

Metal Inert Gas (MIG)

Metal inert gas (MIG) welding is generally used for large and thick material. It employs a consumable wire that acts as both the electrode and the filler material.
MIG is typically a faster process than TIG which results in a lower production cost. It is also easier to learn. Since MIG is more appropriate for thicker metals, it is not as precise, strong, or clean as TIG.

MIG welding is used commonly in pipelines and ships. These industries use thick and heavy metals.

Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG)

Tungsten inert gas (TIG) welding is generally used for small and thin materials. It is more versatile than MIG. TIG can be used with or without a filler.
This metal fabrication process is slower than MIG. The increased labor time leads to higher costs and more time waiting for your product. There are also fewer professionals that can perform TIG welding than MIG. However, you will receive a precise and stronger product.

TIG welding is used most commonly is aviation and aerospace. These industries demand precise welding techniques.
